As you may know, the government has announced plans to limit the Winter Fuel Payments to only pensioners receiving Pension Credit. Whilst there are efforts being made to encourage the government to rethink its plans, it’s still important that carers prepare for the change.

There are an estimated 800,000 people who are eligible for Pension Credit but are not currently receiving it, and we believe that many of these people are be carers. We want you to make sure you are able to receive Pension Credit, provided that you are eligible.

What is Pension Credit?

Pension Credit gives people extra money to help with their living costs if you’re over State Pension age and on a low income. Pension Credit could also qualify eligible applicants other support including Winter Fuel Payment, housing costs, help with Council Tax and a free TV license for those aged 75 and over.

Thanks to the Pension Credit backdating rules, it is possible to apply for Pension Credit and have the claim backdated by up to 3 months - so long as there is entitlement during that time. This means that the latest date to apply and still qualify for Winter Fuel Payment is 21st December 2024.
