Hints and Tips on saving energy

- Use the right-sized pot or pan, pots with lids are best.
- Use the correct hob ring size.
- Pre-boil water in a kettle before adding to pot.
- Ensure the oven door is closed when cooking.
- Let warm food cool before refrigerating

- Air clothes instead of washing after every wear.
- Use the highest spin cycle to reduce tumble drying time.
- Wash clothes at 30°C to save energy.
- Wait for a full load before putting a wash on.

- Fit draught excluders around doors and letterboxes.
- Hang a curtain over the front door to prevent draught.
- Close internal doors to retain heat.

- Take quick showers instead of baths.
- Use a shower timer for shorter showers.
- Turn off taps while brushing teeth or shaving.
- Set your hot water tank to heat only when needed.

Your radiator valves allow you to heat up the whole house or room by room:
- 5 for maximum heat (on cold days)
- 1 for minimum heat (on hot days)
- * for frost-free setting and 2, 3, and 4 for different levels of heat

- Use heavy (or lined) curtains to help reduce losing up to a third of energy through the window.
- In winter, close your curtains at dusk to help keep the heat in.
- In summer, close curtains in rooms you aren’t using to help keep them cool.

- Replace bulbs with LED equivalents to save around £65 a year.
- Turn off lights when not in use.
- Use timers to control lighting.
- Place lamps in corners to maximise light.

- Unplug devices like TVs and toasters when not in use.
- Avoid charging phones overnight.
- Check appliance wattage to manage costs.
- Turn off appliances to save up to £60 a year.

- Ensure combi boiler pressure is between 1 and 2 - this will help save energy.
- Keep the boiler on standby, not off.
- Use timers for heating and hot water.
- Set heating to switch off before bed and on before waking up.

- Provide monthly meter readings for accurate bills.
